Eat first, sleep later
With my parental experience so far, what piece of good advice would I give to a new mum? The main information would be that they should never allow their babies to fall asleep while eating. Always follow the rule: eat first, sleep later.
Unfortunately Yannick never learned this. As he wasn't putting on a lot of weight at the beginning I was going by my midwife's advice to feed him at every possible opportunity. As newborns fall asleep easily while nursing this became a habit. Even now, quite often he thinks eating means sleeping. And sleeping definitely means eating first. When I put him to bed I have to nurse him, he will not fall asleep any other way. If he wakes up at night I have to nurse him, or all hell will be loose. The good news is that our son hardly ever stays up for long during the night. After 10 minutes of nursing he's usually fast asleep again. But as he still has to learn to sleep for longer stretches, I have to nurse him anything between 6 to 12 times per night. Aaaah, sleep, what's that???
